Football 2005
| News / Notes: 2005 |
| August 20: The Big Red were
unable to match what is surely one of the finest high school football teams
in the country in the Clinic Bowl Kickoff Classic held at Vanderbilt Stadium
Saturday night. After stopping the Rebels on their two initial drives,
the Big Red surrendered touchdowns on seven consecutive drives to an extraordinarily
talented offensive unit. The Big Red offense was hampered by four first-half
turnovers before managing a pair of second-half scores. MBA now looks forward
to avenging last year's loss against Trinity this Saturday night at 6:00
at Tommy Owen Stadium. |
| August 20: The 8th grade
football team made a strong showing at its jamboree scrimmage versus St.
Edward's School. The Big Red scored twice, once on a rumble by Fitz Lassing
and the second on a 50 yard scamper by Tommy Harless. Neil Reinhardt was
named MBA's Student-Athlete of the game. The squad opens up the season
with a home game against BGA Thursday, August 25 at 4:15 on Andrews Field. |
| August 25: MBA's 9th grade
football team kicked off their season in winning style with a 26-0 victory
over Gallatin. The Big Red's defense set the tone for the day on its first
series. Led by linebackers Luke Cole and Barrett Jacques, the team controlled
Gallatin's running attack and kept them off the scoreboard. The offense,
led by the rushing of Patrick Crum and the blocking of two-way starters
Joseph Sloan and Wesley Johnson, scored four times in the first half. Special
teams were bolstered by the kicking of Houston Oldham and by John Floyd's
kickoff return. The team's next game is on Thursday, September 1, at Independence
High School. |
| August 25: The Big Red 8th
Grade Football team emerged triumphant in a tough fight with a strong team
from BGA. The first half was a grudge match with some impressive runs from
BGA, however, the Red clinged to a 7-6 lead. The third quarter began with
a game-breaking kickoff return by George Curtis which set up a powerful
touchdown run from Fitz Lassing. The second half was dominated by the Big
Red defense lead by noseguard Ben Mecklenborg, safety Daniel Todd and linebacker
Will Henry. At the final horn the 8th Grade Gridders found themselves victorious
by a score of 21-6. Wednesday, August 31 MBA will host Christ the King
School on Andrews Field at 6pm. |
| August 28: MBA 17, Trinity (KY) 13. The Big Red relied on a gritty running game and clutch defense to defeat a very talented Trinity team Saturday night at Tommy Owen Stadium. Andy Snyder led MBA with 31 carries for 113 yards in addition to three receptions for 35 yards; Snyder scored both Big Red touchdowns, and showed tremendous toughness and determination, as the Shamrock defense forced him to fight for every yard. Defensively, the Big Red forced four fumbles and recovered three. MBA opened the scoring on their second drive of the game. David Howe completed a 30 yard pass to senior Drew Carney to convert a third and 20 situation before handing off to Snyder on three consecutive plays to score the game’s first touchdown. Jordan Keckley’s extra point made the score 7-0. Trinity answered with a 12 play, 80 yard march down the field to even the score. On the ensuing drive, Howe completed all three of his pass attempts for 73 yards to put MBA back on top, 14-7. On two occasions, Trinity seemed on the verge of creating a big play that resulted in a touchdown that so characterized last year’s meeting. In both cases, however, a great individual effort—first by Rich Tompkins and later by Matt Crook—prevented Trinity from reaching the endzone. When the defense held the Shamrocks to a field goal in both cases, MBA was able to carry a 14-13 lead into the final quarter. After Jordan Keckley boomed a 46 yard field goal early in the fourth quarter, both offenses struggled to move the football until MBA gained possession on its own 41 yard line with just under four and a half minutes remaining in the contest. After penetrating all the way to Trinity’s 11 yard line, a penalty and a stubborn Shamrock defense forced the Big Red back to the 21 yard line. With just over a minute remaining, Jordan Keckley’s field goal attempt sailed wide, giving the ball back to Trinity at their own 20 yard line. Needing 80 yards for a touchdown that would win the game, Trinity picked up half of the distance in one play when one of their receivers caught a pass after it was deflected by a Big Red defender. After a second completion moved the ball to MBA’s 23 yard line, Trinity seemed poised to take the lead. MBA refused to relent, however, as Michael Swett sacked the quarterback once, and the defensive line forced a fumble on the ensuing play that was recovered by Ben Daniel as time expired to secure the victory. |
| September 1: The MBA 7th
Grade Football team defeated Springfield Middle School 14-12 in an overtime
thriller. Offensive highlights: (i) Aubrey Witherington threw a 30 yard
completion to John Hughart to get down to the 2 yard line. (ii) Deante
Hughes scored a touchdown in regulation time, but MBA failed to convert
the extra point. (Springfield scored to tie the game 6-6 (they also failed
to convert the extra point), which is how it ended in regulation time.)
(iii) Springfield scored on their first possession in overtime (but failed
to convert the extra point) to take a 12-6 lead, but MBA answered on their
first possession when Joe Reigle scored on a 2 yard run. Then, MBA secured
the victory when Aubrey Witherington connected with John Hughart on a short
pass to convert the extra point! MBA wins 14-12. Defensive highlights:
(i) Solid play by the defensive interior line: Andre Lucaci, Douglas McWilliams,
and Eddie Seay who were supported by Conner Caldwell, Hunter Ractcliffe,
and Brad Swain. (ii) An interception by Hunter Wise. (iii) Joe Reigle stripped
the ball and returned in 25 yards deep into Springfield territory. (iv)
Mark Simpson and Hayden Snyder has several sacks between them deep in the
Springfield backfield. A solid performance by all the boys. They showed
a great deal of character, heart, and determination in a hard-fought victory. |
| September 1: The Freshman
football team won its second game of the year in an exciting and highly
contested game at Independence. In the first half, the offense struggled
because of penalties and turnovers, but was boosted by Patrick Crum’s
touchdowns. These included a run and reception of 40 yards each. Independence’s
spread offense came out firing, and the Big Red trailed 20-14 at the half.
In the second half, the defense bowed its back and kept Independence off
the scoreboard. Leland Howe, Perry Webb, and Dent Shillinglaw all had interceptions
for the team. The defensive front stymied Independence’s run game,
and provided solid pressure in the second half. Patrick Crum added an 80
yard touchdown on 4 th and 1 to tie the game at 20-20. The highlight of
the game came in the last minute as the Big Red had the ball on their own
30 with :45 seconds to go and no timeouts. Back-to back no-huddle connections
from Kile Garrett to Hooper Paty moved the ball down to Independence’s
10 yard line. With the clock running, Garrett and Reggie Ford ran an option
play for a touchdown and a dramatic 26-20 Big Red victory! |
| September 2: The Big Red fell to the Owls from Memphis University School Friday night by a score of 24-0. MUS controlled the majority of the opening half, but were held to a pair of field goals. The Big Red took over possession at their own 22 yard line with just over three minutes remaining in the half looking to take the lead. Nine plays later, MBA had a first and ten situation at the Owls’ 22 yard line. Unfortunately, MBA mishandled an exchange and MUS recovered the fumble. This turnover proved to be a pivotal moment in the game, as the Big Red failed to move the football in the third quarter and MUS reached the endzone to take a 14-0 lead at the end of that period. MUS added a fourth quarter field goal and touchdown to round out the scoring. Charlie Plageman led MBA’s receivers with five catches for 59 yards, while Drew Carney caught four passes for 44. Defensively, Daniel Hightower and Ben Daniel had six tackles each, including one for a loss. Linebacker Parker Prevost made two tackles behind the line of scrimmage. |
| September 7: MBA 7th Grade
Football Team koses to Holy Rosary 14-0. Highlights: MBA was outmanned
by a well-coached, physical, 7th and 8th grade Holy Rosary football team.
Although we were no match for their 8th graders, the boys played well when
Holy Rosary put their 7th graders on the field. On the bright side, all
58 boys were able to get some significant playing time and the experience
should benefit the team later in the season. |
| September 7: The 8th grade
football team proved victorious versus the Tigers of St. Henry's School
28-0. The scoring barrage began with a blocked punt by Daniel Todd which
later lead to a touchdown run from Tee Griscom. Andrew Phillips, Jack Keyser
and Morgan Cram paved the way to the first six points. Later after a stupendous,
girlfriend earning interception by George Curtis, Tee scored again this
time on a 52 yard touchdown pass from Neil Reinhardt. Andrew Fletcher was
perfect with each of his extra point attempts. The powerful defensive effort
was led by solid performances by Austin Locke and Sam Denney. Sam Berklacich
made several tackles for loss throughout the contest. The shutout was preserved
thanks to Denzel Caldwell and his touchdown saving tackle! The Big Red
8 will next travel to Brentwood to face the always tough Woodland Middle
September 15 at 5pm. |
| September 8: MBA's 9th grade
football team pushed its record to 3-0 with a 32-7 victory over a talented
team from Columbia Central. The Big Red offense was again bolstered by
the running of Patrick Crum and Matt Wieck, who had 2 touchdowns each.
The offensive highlight of the day came on a 40+ yard pass from Hooper
Paty to Perry Webb. Webb also added 2 interceptions on the day, and the
team recovered 4 fumbles. Defensively, the Big Red dominated the line of
scrimmage behind strong play from Joseph Sloan, Tom Corcoran, and Barrett
Jacques. MBA's next game is at home on Monday, Sept. 19 against Pearl Cohn. |
| September 9: MBA 24, CPA
0. MBA defeated host Christ Presbyterian Academy by a score of 24-0 Friday
night. After forcing the Lions to punt on their first possession, the Big
Red drove 47 yards on 11 plays to score the opening touchdown of the game
on an Andy Snyder run. After another defensive stand, MBA moved the ball
14 yards to set up a 47 yard field goal by Jordan Keckley. MBA’s
next possession, a 9 play, 76 yard march capped by a David Howe touchdown
run gave the Big Red a 17-0 lead, which they would not relinquish. Offensively,
MBA established a strong ground gain, rushing for 120 yards on 37 carries.
Senior Andy Snyder led the way with 79 yards on 15 carries. Quarterback
David Howe also rushed for two touchdowns. Charlie Plageman led the receiving
corps with 3 catches for 57 yards. Defensively, Mitchell Williams played
his best game of the season, making 6 tackles, breaking up two passes,
and intercepting another. Michael Swett had three tackles, including two
for a loss, and linebacker Daniel Hightower played well to lead the shutout
effort. MBA did not allow the Lions to cross midfield in the first half,
and held CPA to only 145 yards of total offense. |
| September 13: MBA 7th Grade
Football Team Back On Track! MBA rebounds fromlast week's loss to defeat
BGA 22-7. Offensive highlights: (i) Deante Hughes ran the ball with great
determination throughout the first possession. He went on to score MBA's
first touchdown on a 15-yard run around the end, and then we converted
the extra point. (ii) "Ced" Smith made a beautiful catch, broke
two tackles, and ran 30 yards to score MBA's second touchdown, but we failed
to convert the extra point. (iii) Joe Riegle was an absolute workhorse,
hitting the holes hard and punishing the defense. He scored MBA's third
touchdown on a 5-yard run up the middle. Defensive highlights: (i) MBA's
defense was awesome! The interior line did a great job of filling the holes,
the linebackers and ends did a fine job pursuing and containing BGA's running
backs, and the defensive backs shut down their passing game. (ii) Mark
Simpson caused a fumble on a strong safety blitz for a big BGA loss. Overall,
a solid performance by the entire team. I am very proud of the fact that
everyone got plenty of playing time and that our effectiveness on both
offense and defense did not drop off in the least. |
| September 16: MBA 27, Christian
Brothers 14 -- The Big Red played perhaps their best game of the season
en route to a 27-14 victory over Memphis Christian Brothers at Tommy Owen
Stadium. Senior Andy Snyder again led the offensive charge with 31 carries
for 145 yards and a touchdown in addition to four catches for 33 yards.
Defensively, seniors Andrew Warfield and Parker Prevost each had an interception,
while James Banker and Michael Swett had 8 tackles and a sack a piece.
Jordan Keckley kicked a pair of 42 yard field goals to buoy the special
teams. MBA’s defense dominated the first quarter, holding the Purple
Wave to 18 yards on ten plays. On offense, junior quarterback David Howe
and Snyder led the Big Red on a 12 play, 82 yard march that culminated
with an 18 yard touchdown pass from Howe to classmate Reed Blackwell. The
teams traded interceptions before an 8 play, 53 yard drive led to one of
Keckley’s field goals, giving the Big Red a ten point lead. Christian
Brothers responded by marching 65 yards to score a touchdown that closed
out the scoring for the first half. MBA seemed poised to control the game
early in the second half, as a Keckley punt backed the Purple Wave up to
their own two yard line. On the next play, however, a Christian Brothers
back broke through the MBA line and raced 98 yards for a touchdown that
gave the visitors their only lead of the game, 14-10. At this point, the
Big Red offense took over. Howe drove the team 80 yards on 8 plays to regain
the lead. A clutch 3rd down catch by Tate McNeilly kept the drive alive,
and Howe connected with Drew Carney for a 40 yard touchdown strike to make
the score 17-10. The Big Red defense forced a Christian Brothers punt,
and MBA responded with a gritty 47 yard touchdown drive that used nearly
five and a half minutes of clock to give the Big Red a 24-14 lead. The
Purple Wave were unable to move the football in the fourth quarter, and
Keckley added another field goal to preserve the 27-14 victory. For the
second week in a row, MBA dominated time of possession, controlling the
football for over 29 of the game’s 48 minutes. MBA also ran 60 plays
from scrimmage compared to Christian Brothers’ 42. |
| September 19: The 8th Grade
Football team proved too much for The Christ the King Raiders, winning
17-6. The first half was full of great defensive stuffs by an impressive
front of Big Red tacklers. After recovering a fumble on the first series
of the game on the six yard line, Fitz Lassing punched in the first score.
A few minutes later Stuart Murphy rumbled in another score on a power sweep.
During the second quarter Andrew Fletcher drilled a 30 yard field goal
strike. In the second half the Big Red defensive unit allowed a touchdown
but held its ground preserving the win. This Saturday the Big Red has a
huge task of going down to Chattanooga and play McCallie. We'll certainly
work hard to prepare for our next challenge! |
| September 20: MBA 7th grade
dominates CPA 22-6. Offensive highlights: (i) Alex Hunt ran 17 yards to
set up MBA's first touchdown, which was scored when Aubrey Witherington
laced a pass between three defenders to connect with Stan Rozar. Joe Riegle
caught a short pass for the 2-point conversion. (ii) "Ced" Smith
made a great catch and ran 50 yards to score MBA's second touchdown. MBA
made the 2-point conversion when Aubrey Witherington hit Ced Smith again
on a short pass. (iii) Deante Hughes threw a 40-yard halfback pass to John
Hughart who ran down to the 5-yard line. Then, Joe Riegle ran up the middle
to score MBA's third touchdown. We failed to convert the extra point. (iv)
All the aforementioned scoring was done in the first half! Defensive highlights:
(i) MBA's defense was rock solid! The front line and linebackers shut down
CPA's running backs and the defensive backs smothered their receivers.
(ii) Douglas McWilliams, Eddie Seay, and Andre Lucaci had a tackle in the
CPA backfield for a big loss. Alex Gant had a bone-jarring hit on CPA's
quarterback! Overall, a good performance by the entire team. Once again,
everyone got plenty of playing time. |
| September 23: MBA 28, Pope John Paul II 6. MBA rallied after a sluggish start with three touchdowns in the second quarter to defeat Pope John Paul II 28-6 in Hendersonville Friday night. David Howe completed ten of 15 passes for 166 yards and a touchdown to pace the offense; Michael Swett had 8 tackles, including three for a loss and Chris Geer, Matt Crook, and Mitchell Williams each had an interception defensively. JPII received the opening kickoff and drove the football inside MBA’s 35 yard line, where they faced a fourth and one situation. The Knights tried to run the football for the first down, but senior Michael Swett stopped the back in his tracks, and the Big Red took over. The change in momentum, however, would prove short-lived, as MBA mishandled an exchange on their first play from scrimmage and JPII took over on MBA’s 34 yard line. After a short drive, JPII kicked a field goal to give them a three point lead. The teams traded punts before MBA marched 77 yards to score the game’s first touchdown. The drive was highlighted by a 43 yard pass from Howe to senior Will Hackett that set up an eight yard touchdown run by Andy Snyder. On the next play from scrimmage, Senior Mitchell Williams stepped in front of a Knight receiver and intercepted a pass, returning it all the way to the seven yard line. Snyder rushed three times to reach the endzone and give the Big Red a 14-3 lead. On their next possession, MBA marched 77 yards on six plays to score their third touchdown. On this drive, Howe completed all three of his passes for 53 yards before Snyder rushed for his third touchdown of the evening. John Paul added a field goal as time expired to make the halftime score 21-6. The Big Red defense rose to the occasion in the second half. On JPII’s first four drives, they were able to obtain only 18 yards of offense and two first downs. Seniors Will Fitzgerald, Gray Palmer, and Daniel Hightower each had a tackle for a loss. When Howe completed a two-yard touchdown pass to Drew Carney with just over a minute remaining in the third quarter, the Big Red had a commanding 28-6 lead, which proved to be the final score. Eight different Big Red receivers—seniors Hackett, Snyder, Scott Hearon, Tate McNeilly, and McGavock Johnson, and juniors Reed Blackwell, Drew Carney, and Charlie Plageman—caught passes for a total of 237 yards. Hightower had two and a half sacks, while Swett, Palmer, Hightower, James Banker, Luke Brown, Ben Daniel, and Chris Geer each had at least five tackles. Jordan Keckley kicked all four PATs and punted the ball effectively. |
| September 24: The Big Red
8th Grade football team powered their way to an outstanding victory over
McCallie in Chattanooga Saturday afternoon by a score of 20-8. After a
defensive stop in the first quarter Andrew Fletcher kicked off the scoring
barrage with a goal-splitting field goal. Later in the 2nd quarter George
Curtis and Luke Colbert connected on a 20+ yard touchdown strike in the
back of the endzone to make the score 10-0. With less than two minutes
to go in the first half and the Big Red backed up to their own 15, Neil
Reinhardt and Fitz Lassing engineered a marvelous 6 play, 80 yard drive
to get to the McCallie 5 yard line. Andrew Phillips executed a perfect
snap to allow another field goal as time expired. Midway through the third
quarter defensive end, Jordan Herring picked up a turnover and ran it 26
yards to the McCallie 2 yard line. Stuart Murphy gritted his way to the
ensuing touchdown with help from Will Henry, Kevin Carr and Alexander Hornbuckle
who threw key blocks. Throughout the contest the defensive line pummeled
McCallie and thwarted their quick passing attack. Several passes were knocked
down by Will Campbell and Sam Berklacich. Ben Mecklenborg "grabbed
the quarterback's foot!" Afterwards the Big Red devoured Tornado Dogs
provided by the hosts before they headed back home. The squad will play
Monday, September 26 against the always tough Woodland Middle. |
| September 26: The 8th grade
football team held off a physical Woodland squad Monday night by a score
of 19-0. The Big Red jumped to an early lead thanks to great up front blocking
and big thuds by Tee Griscom. Jeffrey Nutkis scored once and Fitz Lassing
made two touchdowns. The defense anchored by Sam Berklacich dominated the
line of scrimmage all night. Will Campbell tried his best to make a touchdown
after a fumble recovery. Late in the second half Neil Reinhardt sealed
the shutout with a big interception. The Red will roll into next week with
a huge game against Brentwood Academy. Roll Red Roll! |
| September 27: MBA 7th Grade
Football is 4-1! MBA crushes Woodland M.S. 34-0. Offensive highlights:
(i) Deante Hughes has two awesome runs to open the game. Then, Aubrey Witherington
threw a 40-yard pass to Ced Smith for MBA's first touchdown. Witherington's
2-point conversion pass to John Hughart failed to hit its target. MBA 6,
Woodland 0. (ii) After a Woodland fumble, Witherington threw a screen pass
to Joe Riegle who ran 50 yards for MBA's second touchdown. Hughes ran it
in for the 2-point conversion. MBA 14, Woodland 0. (iii) After a Woodland
interception, Alex Hunt ran 10-yards for MBA's third touchdown. Witherington
threw a beautiful pass to Hughart for the 2-point conversion. MBA 22, Woodland
0. (iv) Just before half-time, Mark Simpson ran up the middle for a 60-yard
touchdown. The 2-point conversion failed. MBA 28, Woodland 0. (v) In the
second half, Chase Owens (grandson of MBA's own Jamie Tillman.) used his
blinding speed to score a touchdown on a reverse. The 2-point conversion
failed. MBA 34, Woodland 0. Defensive highlights: (i) Shutting Woodland
out, MBA's defense was awesome! (ii) On Woodland's opening possession,
Andre "the Giant" Lucaci tackled the ball-carrier and caused
a fumble to set up MBA's first touchdown. (iii) On Woodland's second possession,
Deante Hughes intercepted a long pass and returned it 55 yards to Woodland's
10-yard line to set up MBA's second touchdown. (iv) Both Patrick Duffy
and Warren Smith had fumble recoveries to stop Woodland drives and preserve
the shutout. Overall, it was a true team victory. We were very proud of
the fact that everyone received significant playing time and that everyone
contributed to the offense's production and the defense's preservation
of the "goose egg" on the scoreboard (no allowing Woodland to
score any points)! |
| September 29: MBA 7th Grade
Football GIVES AWAY a Victory! Now 4-2 on the season. Despite dominating
Harding Academy on both sides of the ball, MBA could not overcome four
lost turnovers. During the first half, MBA's offense moved the ball steadily
down the field, but self-destructed by fumbling four times deep inside
its own territory (once in its own end zone). Although the defense held
Harding to only 12 points (two touchdowns and no 2-point conversions) off
the turnovers and although the defense held Harding to less than 30 yards
total offense during the second half, MBA's offense was unable to overcome
the first-half deficit. Offensive highlights: (i) In the third quarter,
Chase Owens scored a touchdown on a reverse. Then, Deante Hughes ran off
tackle for the 2-point conversion. Harding 12, MBA 8. (ii) Late in the
fourth quarter, Deante Hughes threw deep on a half-back pass to John Hughart.
Hughart and the defender both went up for the ball and both came down with
the ball. Unfortunately, the defender was able to wrestle the ball away
from Hughart for the interception. Great effort by John! Defensive highlights:
(i) MBA's defense was very impressive and, undoubtedly, kept the team in
the game! (ii) The defensive line of Eddie Seay, Andre Lucaci, Conner Caldwell,
Hunter Ratcliffe, Alex Gant, and Douglas McWilliams were awesome. They
were truly a destructive force and completely shut Harding's offense down;
especially in the second half. Overall, we are very proud of the character
the boys demonstrated by fighting back against a talented, well-coached
Harding 7th and 8th grade team. Hopefully, the boys will learn that you
cannot make mistakes against good teams! The next game is against St. Henry
on Tuesday (10/4) at 5:00pm on the 42nd Avenue Field. |
| September 30: MBA 14, Father
Ryan 7. MBA scored two second quarter touchdowns and held on to defeat
arch-rival Father Ryan in Tommy Owen Stadium Friday night. The Big Red
was paced by a stout defense and another tough performance by senior running
back Andy Snyder. MBA’s defense put on a dominating performance.
Ryan’s lone touchdown came as a result of a Big Red turnover, and
the squad held the Irish to only 109 yards from scrimmage and five first
downs. Seniors Andrew Warfield and Mitchell Williams each had crucial interceptions,
while James Banker, Michael Swett, and Gray Palmer all had five tackles.
Sophomore EJ Vinsang blocked a punt to lead the special teams performances.
The Big Red offense consisted almost entirely of Andy Snyder. Of the 52
total “touches”, Snyder accounted for 45, including 38 rushes
and seven receptions. Snyder also had 223 of the team’s 260 total
yards and scored both touchdowns. His performance was made possible by
a strong game from the offensive line, led by seniors Rascoe Dean, Allen
Riley, Billy Billington, and Regen Jewett. Father Ryan had a late opportunity
to tie or win the game, gaining possession with 1:22 remaining in the fourth
quarter after a missed Big Red field goal that would have sealed the victory.
On the first play of the drive, however, Mitchell Williams read the Irish
quarterback and intercepted a deep pass down the sideline to clinch the
win. |
| October 4: MBA 7th Grade

Touchdowns and Tough Defense Secures a 12-0 victory. Offensive highlights:

and took it 30 yards to the endzone on a beautiful run. The 2-point conversion
failed. MBA 6, St. Henry 0. (ii) Early in the fourth quarter, Deante Hughes
had an awesome 40-yard run on a solid drive down the field. Then, he finished
things off with a 5-yard run for a touchdown. Again, the 2-point conversion
failed. MBA 12, St. Henry 0. (iii) The offensive line of Andre Lucaci,
Douglas McWilliams, Alex Gant, Hunter Ratcliffe, and Eddie Seay did an
outstanding job creating holes and picking up constant blitzes. Defensive
highlights: (i) MBA's defense was solid as a rock and, for the second time
this season, delivered a shutout! (ii) Both Chase Owens and John Wyse had
key interceptions that stopped St. Henry's offense from driving down the
field. Overall, a solid team effort with everyone getting some playing
time! The next game is against Brentwood Academy on Thursday (10/6) at
4:00pm on Andrews Field behind the stadium in the heart of MBA's campus. |
| October 6: In a game that
will go down as one of the best in Microbe history, the MBA 8th grade football
team dropped a tough loss to a great Brentwood Academy team 20-6. The game
could have gone either way as the outcome was not determined until the
final horn. In the first half Luke Colbert made a huge interception and
return which led to a Big Red touchdown from Fitz Lassing. The Big Red
put together great drives all night, but untimely misscues kept them out
of the endzone more often. With the score 6-6, BA made a touchdown with
less than a minute to go to make the score 14-6. Seconds later, the Eagles
scored again after picking up a fumble. George Curtis and Campbell Haynes
each had unbelievable nights completely shutting down the BA passing attack.
Tee Griscom played his best game of the year on both sides of the ball.
The Big Red proudly and courageously fought until the very end. Special
thanks to all the students that cheered loudly throughout the game. Fan
Of The Game honors go to Charles Herron. The Big Red will close out its
season Tuesday with the Big Red Bowl versus Lipscomb. Roll Red Roll! |
| October 6: MBA 7th Grade Football Laid the Smack Down on Brentwood Academy to Go to 6-2 on the Season. MBA dominated BA on both sides of the ball to gain a 30-8 victory. (ii) Aubrey Witherington threw a 30-yard pass to John Hughart for MBA's first touchdown. Deante Hughes ran the ball into the endzone for the 2-point conversion. MBA 8, BA 0. (iii) Deante Hughes threw a 40-yard halfback pass to John Hughart to get deep into BA territory. (iv) Deante Hughes ran the ball 5 yards for MBA's second touchdown. The 2-point conversion failed. (vi) Devin McClain ran 55 yards for MBA's fourth touchdown and Chase Pruett ran into the endzone for the 2-point conversion. MBA 30, BA 0. Defensive highlights: (i) MBA's defense was amazing -- punishing tackles, 1 interceptions, 3 fumble recoveries, and 1 stripped ball (a take-away)! (ii) Alex Gant recovered a fumble on BA's first offensive possession. (iii) Joe Riegle stripped the ball from the runningback on BA's second offensive possession. (iv) Hunter Wise recovered a fumble on BA's third offensive possession. (v) Douglas McWilliams hit the quarterback as he threw the ball, which was intercepted by Eddie Seay. (vi) Chase Pruett and John Wise recovered a BA fumble in the second half. Overall, a complete team victory with everyone getting some playing time! The next game is against Grassland Middle School on Tuesday (10/10) at 4:30pm at Grassland M.S. and then the final game is against David Lipscomb in the Big Red Bowl on Tuesday (10/11) at 4:00pm in MBA's Tommy Owen Stadium. |
| October 7: MBA 17, BA 7. Michael Swett blocked a punt
and returned it for a touchdown to lead the Big Red to a 17-7 victory over
visiting Brentwood Academy Friday night. MBA rushed for 150 yards and did
not turn the ball over, while the defense controlled the Eagle’s
offensive attack in a conservatively managed game. MBA opened the scoring
just over two minutes into the second quarter on a six yard Andy Snyder
touchdown run that capped a 13 play, 80 yard drive. On the drive, quarterback
David Howe completed two of three passes for 40 yards, and Snyder rushed
eight times for 34 yards. Will Hackett had a critical reception on third
down to preserve the drive. MBA had the opportunity to expand its lead
to 10-0 as the first half ended, but failed to convert a 30 yard field
goal. The second half began inauspiciously for MBA, as Brentwood Academy
drove 74 yards on 14 plays to score a touchdown and even the score at 7-7.
After MBA’s next drive failed to move the football, BA seemed poised
to take the lead as they gained possession at MBA’s 41 yard line.
A big defensive stand and a poor BA punt put the Big Red back in good field
position. After a second failed Big Red field goal, BA took over at its
own 20 yard line. When three rushes yielded no yards, Brentwood Academy
set up to punt the football. Senior lineman Michael Swett stormed through
the Eagle’s line and, in his words, “power cleaned” another
protector as he blocked the punt. He then scooped up the loose football
and carried it into the endzone for the go-ahead touchdown. On BA’s
next play from scrimmage, Mitchell Williams intercepted a pass, which set
up a Clayton Foster field goal that gave the Big Red a ten point lead with
less than three minutes remaining in the game to seal the victory. Statistically,
MBA controlled the football game. They outgained BA 241 to 136 yards. Excluding
BA’s one scoring drive, the Big Red held the Eagles to only 62 yards
from scrimmage. The Big Red offense also converted six of thirteen third
down chances. Snyder was again MBA’s workhorse, as he rushed 26 times
for 107 yards. Drew Carney and Reed Blackwell each caught two of David
Howe’s passes. Defensively, Ben Daniel had two tackles for a loss,
including a sack. Ben Bartholomew, Chris Geer, Luke Brown, and James Banker
each had four tackles. |
| October 10: MBA 7th Grade

Season. After trailing for three quarters, MBA scores two touchdowns and
two conversion in the 4th quarter to beat GMS 16-14! Offensive highlights:
(i) Van East threw a 5-yard pass to Tyler Cauble for MBA's first touchdown.
Then, East threw to a pass to Mark Simpson for the 2-point conversion.
MBA 8, GMS14. (ii) Alec Hunt threw a 30-yard halfback pass to Chase Owen
who ran another 30 yards for MBA's second touchdown. Then, once again,
Van East threw to Mark Simpson for the 2-point conversion. MBA 16, GMS
14. Defensive highlights: (i) Although GMS's offense moved the ball well
during the first half, MBA's defense stepped up in the third quarter and
then shut their offense down in the fourth quarter. (ii) The entire defense
did an exceptional job late in the game in order to prevent GMS from scoring
a game-winning touchdown. We are very proud of the team for fighting back
after getting in a hole due to a slow start. The boys demonstrated a great
deal of character and determination! The final game is against David Lipscomb
in the Big Red Bowl on Tuesday (10/11) at 4:00pm in MBA's Tommy Owen Stadium. |
| October 11: Congratulations are in order for the 8th
grade football team put the finishing touches on a terrific season with
a 10-8 victory over Lipscomb. Andrew Fletcher gave the Big Red its first
three points with a 30+ yard field goal after a dominating drive in the
first quarter. The Mustangs hung tough and almost scored near the end of
the second quarter if it were not for a clutch interception by Neil Reinhardt.
After a huge defensive stand to begin the third quarter, a botched punt
snap allowed a host of Big Red defenders to reclaim the football deep in
Lipscombs side of the field. Luke Colbert engineered a maginficent scoring
drive putting the Big Red up 10-0. The defense played courageously all
night with huge plays made by Jordan Herring, Sam Berklacich and as sweet
interception by Campbell Haynes. The 'Stangs added a score in the fourth
quarter, but it was too late for a comeback as the Big Red would not yield.
Afterwards gameballs were awarded to the following players voted on by
their teammates: Best Leader: Tee Griscom; Best Attitude: Wiley Hunt; Hardest
Worker: George Curtis; Unsung Hero: Will Henry; Best Tackler: Fitz Lassing;
Best Blocker: Will Campbell; MVP's: Min Choi, Nathan DeWitt, Mitchell Lukens,
Daniel White. Coach G "flipped" over the great finish to the
fantastic year! |

to watching this group of young men develop into a solid football team.
We have high expectations for these young men and look forward to their
continued success as they move up the school. Now, get ready for wrestling
season!! |
| October 17: MBA's freshman
pushed its record to 4-1 last night with an exciting victory over Franklin
High. The Big Red defense held firm at the beginning of the game after
the offense twice gave Franklin the ball inside the 25 yard line. MBA eventually
got on the board in the second half after a long run by Patrick Crum. Franklin
added a score and a 2-point conversion to lead 8-7 at halftime. The teams
traded scores in the scond half, and Franklin tied the game at 21-21 with
2:30 left on the clock. However, the MBA defense held on the conversion
attempt to keep the game tied. On the next series, Kile Garrett completed
a long pass to Hooper Paty, and then Patrick Crum had another run for a
touchdown. On the day Crum had 4 rushing touchdowns. Franklin's first offensive
play after the kickoff was then intercepted by Luke Cole. Franklin's defense
forced MBA to kick, and Houston Oldham drilled a 37 yard field goal to
seal the win. Oldham was also 4 of 4 for the day on PATs. MBA's next game
will be against McCallie at 4:00 on Friday, October 21. |
October 21:
Varsity Football: MBA 28, McCallie 21 (2OT) It took
the Big Red two overtimes and a fourth-down stand from the one-yard-line
to defeat McCallie 28-21 in a thriller on Friday night. The Big
Red did not lead the game until the second overtime. The game was
a dead-heat statistically, as MBA rushed for 115 yards compared
to 117 for McCallie, threw for 204 yards compared to 200, and earned
14 first downs to McCallie’s 15. David Howe threw for a pair
of touchdowns and rushed for a third to lead the offense, while
Mitchell Williams recorded 10 tackles and Andrew Warfield defended
four passes defensively.
The first quarter was characterized by McCallie near-misses,
as the Blue Tornado penetrated the MBA thirty-yard-line twice, only to miss a
field goal on both occasions. MBA’s offense failed to get on track, as
the Big Red punted the ball four times, turned the ball over one downs, and threw
an interception to account for its seven first-half possessions. The biggest
play of the half came with just under four minutes remaining, when McCallie blocked
an MBA punt after a mishandled snap. The Blue Tornado took over inside the Big
Red five-yard-line, and quickly scored the half’s only touchdown.
MBA’s offense came out firing to start the second
half. The Big Red marched 71 yards on six plays to even the score at seven. The
big play on the drive was a 36 yard run off the left tackle by Andy Snyder on
third down. Three plays later, David Howe connected with Drew Carney for a 14-yard
touchdown. McCallie fought back, however, and regained the lead 14-7 on the ensuing
drive.
The teams traded punts until the Big Red regained possession
about halfway through the fourth quarter at its own 21-yard-line. The Bid Red
quickly covered the 79 yards to the endzone to even the score. On the drive,
Howe completed a 37 yard pass to Carney, a key third down throw to Charlie Plageman,
and a 27 yard shuffle pass to Snyder for the tying score.
McCallie regained possession and drove the ball across
MBA’s forty-yard-line before they stalled and punted the ball back, ensuring
the game would go to overtime. In high school, each team has an opportunity to
start a possession at the opponent’s 10-yard-line, and the game continues
until one team holds a lead after both squads have had an equal number of opportunities
to score.
In the first extra period, McCallie scored on a third
down play from the three-yard-line to take the lead. Snyder answered immediately,
and Clayton Foster’s kick put the game into the second overtime, in which
MBA’s offense would go first. On first down, Snyder ran to the McCallie
one yard-line. After Snyder was stopped on second down, Howe scored the go-ahead
touchdown on a quarterback sneak to make the score 28-21. McCallie’s first
two plays moved the football to the three-yard-line. On third down, the McCallie
quarterback seemed poised to run the ball into the corner of the endzone, when
senior defensive backs Gray Palmer and Mitchell Williams stopped him just shy
of the one-yard-line, bringing up a fourth and goal-to-go situation. MBA’s
defense rose to the occasion, and stuffed McCallie, who mishandled the exchange
from center to secure the victory in dramatic fashion.
Offensively, Howe’s three touchdowns were crucial,
as were Andy Snyder’s 107 yards of rushing. Carney caught three passes
for 68 yards, while Will Hackett caught three for 31 and Reed Blackwell had two
receptions for 23 yards. On defense, Williams’s 10 tackles led the way.
Michael Swett added a sack, while Gray Palmer had eight tackles, including one
for a loss. Clayton Foster’s four extra points were essential in earning
a hard-fought victory.
