November 19: The MBA Varsity Basketball team kicked off the 2004-2005 season Friday night with a 44-38 victory over White House-Heritage in a preseason match-up. While this game did not count on the team's overall season record, it was a great opportunity for fans to get a glimpse of what is to come this season. Junior Deon Gaines poured in 17 points including three 3ptrs. Senior Tee Patterson also chipped in with 7 points on the night. Next up for the Big Red squad is Independence High School on Tuesday evening, Nov. 23rd at 7:30pm. MBA will then travel to Memphis to take on MUS and Christian Brothers during the first weekend in December.
November 22: The MBA Freshman Basketball Team tipped off the year with a solid defensive effort and a 56-22 win over Hume Fogg. The Big Red had a balanced scoring attack led by Austin Bennett, Nathan Wade, William Davis and Johnathon Haynes. Defensively, Andrew Harris and Jon Eisen produced steals that led to scoring opportunities for MBA.
November 22: Last night in Columbia, the 7th graders found themselves down 13 points in the first few minutes of the game. With teamwork, hustle and Fitz Lassing's 22 points, the 7th grade basketball team fought back and defeated Whitthorne 79-25. Everyone played an outstanding game.
The 8th graders also fought a hard fight against a tough Whitthorne team. In a game saving attempt with a few seconds left, Patrick Crum and Drew Turner hit shots to put MBA within one point, but it wasn't enough to pull out the win. The 8th grade lost 41-40.
November 23: JV - The MBA JV squad soundly defeated a young Independence High School team on Tuesday night. The JV team in now 1-0 on the season with games coming up this weekend against MUS and Cristian Brothers in Memphis.
November 23: Varsity - The Big Red(1-0)overcame a 23-20 halftime deficit against Independence High School on Tuesday evening to earn its first victory of the young season by a score of 51-42. MBA was led by Junior Deon Gaines with 14 points and Senior Brenton Harrison with 10 points, 6 rebounds, and 4 assists. Senior C.J. Hurt and Junior Thomas Sanders both grabbed 7 rebounds in the game. The team's next game will be on Friday night against MUS at 7:30pm in Memphis, followed by a game against Christian Brothers on Saturday afternoon. The next home game will be Tuesday, Dec. 7th at 7:30pm against Shelbyville. Harpeth Hall will play Shelbyville in MBA's gym at 6:00pm.
November 30: On Tuesday, both MBA Microbe teams won exciting games against BA. In the 7th grade game, MBA defeated BA 55 to 25. The team was led by Luke Colbert with 12 points and Tee Griscom with 8 points. Tyler Paslick made several great assists. In an even more exciting game, the 8th grade team defeated BA 55 to 49. Joseph Sloan scored 21 points, and Drew Turner had 14. Congratulations to both teams!
November 30: The Freshman Basketball team led by a strong defensive effort was able to defeat MLK 49-25 on Tuesday. Johnathon Haynes, Jon Eisen, Jas Rader and Alphonsa Knight led a great scoring effort of the bench as they combined for 30 points. The Freshman play again today at Ravenwood (4 p.m.) and Thursday at Hume Fogg (4 p.m.).
December 1: The Freshman Basketball suffered its first loss of the season as they fell to Ravenwood 37-29. The Big Red was led by Austin Bennett with 14 points. The freshman will look to get back on the winning track today at Hume Fogg at 4 p.m.
December 2: The MBA Freshman Basketball team completed a grueling three game stretch with a 35-18 win over Hume Fogg. The team overcame a tough shooting night with a stingy defensive effort. The trio of Johnathon Haynes, Austin Bennett and Nathan Wade scored 25 of the team's 35 points. The team now will take an overall record of 4-1 to Hillwood next Tuesday at 4 p.m.
December 2: On Thursday, the 8th grade pulled out another exciting win against Lipscomb. Patrick Crum stayed in the game with two hurt legs and still scored 14 points. Joseph Sloan also scored 10 points, with Drew Turner pitching in another 7. In a heartbreaker, the 7th grade team lost 37 to 33 against Lipscomb. Both Tee Griscom and Fitz Lansing led the team in scoring with 8 points each.
December 3-4: The MBA JV basketball team traveled to Memphis this past weekend to take on MUS and Christian Brothers. Unfortunately the squad ended un on the losing end in both games. Highlights from the weekend included aggressive play by Sophomores Adam Baker and David Smith.
December 3-4: The Varsity basketball team lost a close game to MUS on Friday night by a score of 38-35. The Big Red was led by C.J. Hurt with 12 points and Tee Patterson with 8 points. Saturday, the team faced Christian Brothers in the second of two games on the road in Memphis. MBA was unable to sustain a lead in the second half and ended up losing the game in overtime by a score of 58-52. Tee Patterson led the team with 19 points including 5 3-pointers. Deon Gaines scored 13 points, and C.J. Hurt added 10.
December 7: The Varsity basketball team lost to Shelbyville Tuesday night by a score of 47-28. Shelbyville had a 14-4 lead at the end of the first quarter, and never looked back. MBA's record is now 1-3. Upcoming games include a game Friday evening against Harding Academy (Memphis) at 7:30pm here at MBA and a game Saturday afternoon at 5:00pm against Knoxville Webb also on MBA's campus.
December 7-8: The Freshman Basketball team swept back to back games on the road against Hillwood and Oveton on Tuesday and Wednesday respectively. The Big Red downed the Hilltoppers 38-31 in a tough defensive game as Austin Bennett led all scorers with 10 points and William Davis made two clutch shots in the fourth quarter. MBA then went on to defeat Oveton 55-41 led by Nathan Wade's 18 points and and 10 from William Davis. The Freshman record now moves to 6-1 as we face Centennial Saturday morning at 11 a.m.
December 8: Microbe results from the Overbrook Tournament - MBA's 7th Grade lost in a heartbreaker last night to St. Edward's 7th/8th grade team 41-39. Scoring 24 points and truly giving it his all, Fitz Lassing played an amazing game. Although it was a heartbreaker, the 7th grade team should be proud because they were the only 7th grade team in the tournament. MBA's 8th Grade team had better success last night. They defeated St. Henry 53-29. Joseph Sloan led the team in scoring with 23, while Patrick Crum and Ryan King followed up with 8 & 7 respectively. Kile Garrett also contributed with 5 points. The 8th grade will play again Friday night at 7:00 pm.
December 10: The Big Red Varsity Basketball team lost to Harding Academy (Memphis) by a score of 76-49 Friday night, Dec. 10th. Junior Deon Gaines led the way for MBA with 16 points. College prospect Marian Price was too much to handle as he hit 15-15 free throws in the game and scored 41 points for Harding Academy. Less than 24 hours later, the Big Red took on Knoxville Webb in Brownlee O. Currey Gymnasium. The team bounced back with a 54-39 victory, led by Deon Gaines with 14 points, Tee Patterson with 13 points, and C.J. Hurt with 10 points. Tuesday evening, Dec. 14th, the varsity squad traveled to Gallatin, Tennessee to take on College Heights Christian Academy. MBA proved to be too athletic for its young opposition, winning the game by a score of 73-29. Seniors Brenton Harrison and C.J. Hurt led the team with 14 points each, and Junior Deon Gaines contributed with 13 points. The Big Red (3-4 on the season) forced 31 turnovers on the night. The team is off for the hollidays until December 28th & 29th when it takes on Lebanon and Hendersonville respectively in the Coke Classic at Hendersonville High School.
December 11: Saturday, MBA's 8th grade basketball team played in the second round of the Overbrook Tournament. Despite a terrific defensive effort, MBA lost 38-33 to Brentwood Academy. Patrick Crum led the team offensively, scoring 12 points, and Reggie Ford added an additional 8. Later that day, the 8th grade played in a consolation game against Lipscomb and won 47-30. Once again, the leading scorers were Patrick Crum with 16 and Reggie Ford with 10. Congratulations to a great tournament and third place finish. Congrats also to Patrick Crum who was named a member of the All-tournament team.
December 11: The Freshman Basketball team improved its record to 7-1 with a 45-28 victory over Centennial on Saturday. The Big Red had a balanced scoring attack led by big men Jay Cole and Austin Bennett. The Freshman have two games remaining before the break against Ensworth and Ravenwood on Tuesday and Friday respectively.
December 11: The JV MBA Basketball team lost a close game to Knoxville Webb on Saturday, Dec. 11th. The team's record is now 1-3.
December 14: The MBA Freshman basketball team defeated Ensworth High School by a score of 27-14 behind a tremendous defensive effort. The Big Red limited the Tigers to 1 point in the second half. Nathan Wade and Austin Bennett combined to score 20 points to lead MBA on offense end. With the victory, the Freshman pushed their record to 8-1. The Freshman have one game remaining before the Holiday Season with a rematch against Ravenwood on Friday afternoon at 4 p.m.
December 28-29: The Big Red Basketball team won the Hendersonville Coke Classic defeating Lebanon 51-48 and Hendersonville, 52-38!! Brenton Harrison led with 18 points against Lebaon and Deon Gaines led with 19 points in the win against Hendersonville. Congratulations BIG RED!!!
January 3: The JV Basketball team lost a competitive game to Wilson Central on Monday afternoon.
January 3: The Big Red Varsity team lost Monday night by a score of 57-42 to a very talented Wilson Central team. MBA was led by Deon Gaines with 10 points. Next up for the team is Fater Ryan Thursday evening at 7:30 here at MBA. BE THERE!
January 4: Tuesday night, both the 7th and 8th grade basketball teams defeated two good Brentwood Middle School teams. In the 7th grade game, Fitz Lassing had a great night and scored 19 points. Tee Griscom followed up with 10 points and several key rebounds, and Michael Seitz added 8. The 7th grade team won 44-30. Congrats on the win!
January 4: In an exciting 8th grade game, MBA came from behind to defeat Brentwood Middle in overtime 48-43. Scoring 17, Joseph Sloan led the team in both effort and points. Ryan King followed up with 16 points, including a clutch 3 in overtime. Overall the team hit 11 of 13 free throws to help get MBA back into the game and on to victory. Great job guys!
January 6: MBA's 7th grade basketball team defeated Grassland 37-23 Thursday afternoon. Michael Seitz scored 14, and John Lowe scored 7. Good job!
January 6: The 8th grade lost to Grassland 35-48. Leading scorers were Drew Turner with 8 and Patrick Crum with 7. Our next games are home on Tuesday, Jan. 11 at 3:45 and 4:45.
January 8: The MBA JV Basketball team has been playing well as of late with a one point victory over Father Ryan last Thursday evening, and a comfortable win over JPII on Saturday afternoon. Ryan Coopwood hit a jumper with 1.6 seconds to play in regulation to give the Big Red JV the win over Father Ryan. Freshmen Nathan Wade, Austin Bennett, and William Davis have given the team a good lift since joining the squad on Thursday.
January 8: Varsity - The Big Red Varsity Basketball team lost to Father Ryan on Thursday night by a score of 62-32. Dylan Heim hit four three pointers in the first quarter, and scored 17 points in the first half to lead Ryan to the easy victory. MBA was led by Deon Gaines with 9 points on the evening. The Big Red then traveled to JPII on Saturday night, and lost by a score of 52-48. The team battled back from a fourth quarter deficit of 16 points to come within 3 points of Division II opponent JPII, but ran out of time. Deon Gaines scored 19 points while Brenton Harrison contributed with 12 points.
January 11: The Freshman Basketball team got off to a good start for the second half of the season with a 50-43 victory over Hillwood. MBA was paced offensively by Nathan Wade with 12 points and Austin Bennett and Zac Cordell combining for 23 inside. The Freshman game with Ensworth that was scheduled today has been postponed until January 31st. The Freshman now look forward to hosting Father Ryan on Friday at 4 p.m.
January 11: The MBA JV Basketball team defeated BGA Tuesday evening by one point in a competitive game. Sophomore Charlie Plageman scored 10 points all in the second half to help the team win its third straight game.
January 11: The Big Red Varsity squad lost to BGA Tuesday night by a score of 47-41. The team hopes to end a four game skid on Friday when it travels to Upperman for a game at 8:00pm.
January 14: The Varsity Basketball team traveled down I-40 last Friday for a matchup against Upperman and left a hostile environment with a 64-60 victory in double overtime. After a questionable call by the officials, Upperman hit a shot with 0.3 seconds to play in regulation, sending the game to overtime. The Big Red players maintained their poise, and sophomores David Smith and Sam Little both hit two free throws in the last minute of the second overtime to seal the victory. MBA was led by junior Deon Gaines with 19 points and senior Tee Patterson with 18 points. Senior C.J. Hurt also contributed 13 points of his own. The team's record is now 6-8.
January 17: The Varsity Basketball team improved its record Monday afternoon to 7-8 by defeating Bartlett High School by a score of 50-37. After trailing by 8 points at the half, MBA outscored its opposition 21-3 in the third quarter to take control of the game. Deon Gaines scored 17 points, Tee Patterson scored 13 points, and Brenton Harrison added 11 points. Next up for the Big Red is Brentwood Academy on Friday evening.
January 21: On Jan. 21, the 7th grade team defeated Ensworth 50-23. Fitz Lassing scored 12 points.
January 21: The MBA JV basketball team lost a close game to Brentwood Academy on Friday afternoon. The Big Red squad fought back after trailing early on by double digits, and gave itself a chance to win the game in the fourth quarter. Charlie Plageman and Adam Baker led the way for the JV team.
January 21: The Big Red Varsity basketball team lost to Brentwood Academy on Friday night by a score of 53-26. Despite having a solid game plan, MBA was not able to neutralize the height and talent of the Eagles. The Big Red has a very important week coming up with games Tuesday at home against JPII, Friday at USN, and Saturday against Baylor.
January 25: On Jan. 25, the 8th grade lost another heartbreaker to Brentwood Academy 44-47. Once again Joseph Sloan was the high scorer with 20 points and Patrick Crum added 14.
January 25: The JV basketball team bounced back from a loss Friday by defeating JPII Tuesday afternoon in a competitive game. Matthew Kimball and Charlie Plageman led the way for the Big Red.
January 25: MBA's 7th grade beat Brentwood Academy 51-24. This was the second victory over BA. Tee Griscom had a great defensive game and scored 8 points.
January 25: Although MBA led JPII by 5 points at halftime Tuesday night, the team was not able to get the job done, and lost the game by a score of 43-32. Senior Brenton Harrison led the way for the Big Red with 12 points.
January 27: In a great show of teamwork, the 7th grade crushed Woodland 47-37. Fitz Lassing contributed 11 points.
January 27: The 8th grade crunched Woodland ,53-39, on Jan. 27. Patrick Crum played an excellent game, scoring 21 points, and Joseph Sloan scored an additional 10.
January 28: The MBA JV basketball team soundly defeated USN on Friday afternoon. Thanks to great defensive effort in the second half, MBA was able to pull away from the Tigers and win the game.
January 28: The MBA Varsity basketball team defeated USN on Friday night by a score of 56-33. Deon Gaines hit three 3 pointers, and scored 17 points to lead the Big Red. Tee Patterson added 11 points.
January 29: Saturday afternoon, the MBA Varsity Basketball team improved its overall record to 9-10 by defeating a very talented Baylor team by a score of 49-48. Junior Deon Gaines, who led the Big Red in scoring for the game with 18 points, hit a difficult driving layup with under 20 seconds to play in the fourth quarter. Baylor had one last shot to win the game, by great defense by C.J. Hurt and Deon Gaines prohibited Baylor from getting a good look at the basket, and a desperation shot fell well short as the buzzer sounded. Next up for MBA is an important region match-up against BGA on Tuesday night. The JV game begins at 6:00pm at MBA, followed by the Varsity game at 7:30pm.
January 31: The Freshman Basketball team traveled to Ensworth High School on Friday afternoon and was able to come away with a grueling 34-21 victory. A strong defensive effort led by Nathan Wade and Jonathon Haynes held the Tigers to four second half points. The Freshman take an 11-4 record into the regular season finale against MLK in the Main Gym at 4 today.
February 1: With great support from the home crowd, the 7th grade defeated CPA 50-31. John Lowe had a terrific night scoring 16 points. Fitz Lassing followed up adding 14. The next game is Feb. 3 against Ensworth at home. The 7th grade team is 13-2 for the season. Keep it up guys!
February 1: The Freshman Basketball team overcame a tough shooting night with a strong defensive effort to defeat Martin Luther King High School 44-35. William Davis led all scorers with 9 points. With the victory, the Freshman concluded the regular season with a 12-4 record. The Freshman will compete next week in the City Championship at Overton High School.

The Freshman Basketball team enters the District 11 Tournament as the number one seed. The first game for the Big Red will be Tuesday, February 8, at 4:30 at Overton High School with the opponent yet to be determined.
February 2: Tuesday afternoon, the Big Red JV squad soundly defeated BGA. Thursday afternoon, the team did not fair as well, losing by three points to Brentwood Academy.
February 2: Varsity - Tuesday night the MBA Varsity basketball team lost by a score of 45-30 to BGA. Thursday night the Big Red lost to Brentwood Academy by a score of 57-27. Deon Gaines had 19 points against BGA and 15 points against BA. The team's overall record is now 9-12.
February 3: Hitting 9 three pointers, the MBA 7th grade team defeated Ensworth 51-27 last night. John Lowe was high scorer with 15 points and Fitz Lassing added an additional 10. Every team member contributed greatly, though. Congratulations guys! Because our last two regular season games were canceled, our next game will be the end of the year tournament. We will play Thursday, Feb. 10 at CPA.
February 3: The MBA 8th grade basketball team won a great game against Ensworth last night 45-39. Joseph Sloan had 21 points and shot 10 of 12 from the field. Patrick Crum added an additional 14 points, 5 assists, and held his man to 0 points. Reggie Ford took an amazing charge late in the fourth quarter to stop their run. Owen Lipscomb played great defense, and Zach Brickner played well off the bench after Sloan came out with four fouls. Point guard Drew Turner had turned the ball over only twice and played great defense against the best guard in the HVAC.
February 5: The MBA JV basketball squad looked to avenge an earlier season loss to David Lipscomb on Saturday afternoon. Thanks to a great overall team effort MBA emerged victorious by a solid margin.
February 5: The MBA Varsity basketball team lost to David Lipscomb on Saturday night by a score of 54-51. Deon Gaines scored a season high 23 points, including 10 points in the 4th quarter.
February 8: The JV squad continued its stellar play, cruising to a 30 point victory on Tuesday afternoon against the Tigers from USN.
February 8: The Varsity basketball team earned a Division II region victory by defeating USN on Tuesday evening by a score of 43-29. Deon Gaines led the way with 21 points. Gaines and Junior Tee Patterson shot a combined 15-17 from the free throw line in the game. Next up for the Big Red is a game Saturday night at Rossview, before returning home to Brownlee O. Currey Gymnasium on Tuesday for the final home game of the regular season against Mt. Juliet. Make plans now to honor the seniors before the game on Senior Night.
February 12: The Big Red JV squad is on a roll after traveling to Clarksville on Saturday and defeating Rossview High School. Sophomore Pabodh Mishra played inspired basketball in front of his hometown crowd, and helped his team cruise to a 30+ point victory.
February 12: The MBA Varsity team traveled to Clarksville Saturday afternoon, and defeated Rossview High School 48-47. Deon Gaines led the way with 15 points. James Bolden, a 6'-4'' Division I prospect , missed the second of two free throws with 2.9 seconds left to play in regulation, and Hughes Tipton secured the rebound as the clock expired, giving the Big Red the victory.
Microbe 7th Grade Season Summary (posted 2/15/05): The 7th grade basketball team finished the year on an exciting high note winning CPA's end of the year tournament. In the first round, played Thursday afternoon, MBA defeated Lipscomb 51-34. This was an especially sweet win, considering our only 7th grade loss came from Lipscomb early in the year. Fitz Lassing was the high scorer with 17 points and Tee Griscom contributed 13. Tyler Paslick hit a 3 in the 3rd quarter to spark a big scoring run and ended the game with 9 points. In the finals, MBA defeated CPA for the third time this year. The final score was 38-34. Michael Seitz led the team in scoring with 12 points, while Fitz Lassing scored 9. Luke Colbert played an outstanding game scoring 5 of his 8 points in the 4th quarter to pull MBA ahead. The 7th grade team had an outstanding year with only two losses, and one of those was to an 8th grade team. They finished the year 18-2. Congratulations guys on an outstanding season!
February 15: In the first round of the HVAC tournament at Ensworth High School, MBA's 8th Grade team defeated Woodland 46-32. Drew Turner had 9 points and no turnovers as point guard for most of the game. The team only committed 6 turnovers all night. Joseph Sloan had 17points and went 5 of 6 from the line. Patrick Crum had 12 points including 2 3’s. He also had 5 assists. The next game is Tuesday at 5:30 at Ensworth High against Grassland. They will have a huge crowd there, so we need one too.
February 15: The MBA Varsity basketball team lost a close game to Mt. Juliet by a score of 50-46. Deon Gaines scored 18 points to lead the Big Red. Brenton Harrison added 13 points, and Tee Patterson contributed with 11 points. Once again, MBA put itself in a position to win the game, but Nick Anand was whistled for a questionable intentional foul with less than 20 seconds to play in the game that allowed Mt. Juliet to secure the win.
February 17: The JV squad traveled to the friendly confines of Father Ryan for its season finale. Despite trailing by 8-10 points for most of the game, the team battled back in the 4th quarter to tie the game at the end of regulation. Father Ryan eventually pulled away in overtime for the victory. David Howe played an important role in MBA's come-back. Howe hit a 3-pointer with less than a minute to go in regulation that sent the game to the extra period.
February 17: The MBA Varsity basketball team traveled to Father Ryan, looking for redemption after a 30-point loss earlier in the season. Despite trailing in the first half by as many as 12 points, the team battled back in the second half, and eventually took the lead by as many as 5 points in the fourth quarter. The Big Red was not able to sustain the lead, though, committing 4 turnovers in the fourth quarter and shooting 11/21 from the free throw line for the game. Father Ryan won the game by a score of 58-51. In a true team effort, Tee Patterson had 16 points, while Brenton Harrison added 15, and Deon Gaines scored 14 points.
February 22: The MBA Varsity Basketball team faced off against JPII Tuesday evening in the first round of the Division II Middle Region Tournament. The Big Red got off to a great start, as Brenton Harrison capitalized on a rare opportunity to get a 4-point play by making the free throw after sinking a three pointer. JPII battled back, though, and took the lead by a score of 23-22 at halftime. MBA continued to battle in the second half, and tied the game with less than a minute to play in regulation. Golden Tate from JPI hit a foul-line jumper with less than 3 seconds left to play in the game. MBA had one last chance to win the game, but Tee Patterson's half-court desperation shot hit the back rim, giving JPII the 2 point victory. Deon Gaines led the way for the Big Red with 18 points and Brenton Harrison added 16 points. This loss in the Region Tournament concludes the season for the basketball team. The coaches and players would like to extend a special thanks to Athletic Director Jeff Rutledge and Mrs. Carmen Mossissey for all that they did to make sure the season went smoothly. Also, the team would like to thank Dr. Jon Neergaard for his dedication, as well as Dr. Dede Clements, Mr. David Norton, Dr. Michael Marro, Mr. Jamie Tillman, Mr. Jeff Gouline and Mr. Matt Golenor.
