Todd Miller gave up 8 runs, 5 earned in the loss (11-5) that ended at about 1:00 AM. The next night MBA went to Bartlett for the second round game. The Big Red mounted a comeback in the 8th, getting 2 runners on, but BGA made a great play to end the game. Nick Power had 2 RBI and also played terrific game in center. The Big Red are now 7-6.

April 18: The JV Baseball team lost in a hard fought battle against Lipscomb yesterday 8-5. Scott Schwartz and Jas Rader led the Big Red offensive attack with 2 hits each. April 18-19: The 7th/8th grade baseball A team suffered two tough losses this week, Monday night to Goodpasture, 1 - 4 and Tuesday night to David Lipscomb, 4 - 9. Monday night after jumping to a first inning lead on an RBI double by Tom Corcoran, the Big Red bats were silenced by the Goodpasture ace and held in check for the rest of the game. Defensively they played pretty well and solid pitching performances were turned in by Matt Ractliffe, Whit Woodring, and Zach Brickner. Tuesday night a costly error with runners on base affected the outcome of the game. MBA hit much better against Lipscomb highlighted by a 3 for 4 night at the plate by Davis Hunt and 2-hit games by Whit Woodring and Zach Brickner. Wade Nelson and Coleman Breland pitched well. The JV lost in disappointing fashion to Hunter's Lane 4-2. Thursday afternoon the JV gets another crack at the Eagles, this time at Brentwood Academy.
April 20: The Microbe Big Red overcame a 2-0 first inning deficit to defeat Ensworth 20-3. Pitchers Oliver Oldacre and Luke Colbert led MBA, pitching 6 strong innings. The Big Red Defense was excellent again. MBA turned yet another double play, although this one was hardly conventional. Left fielder Spencer Wise fielded a base hit and made a great throw to catcher Jeffrey Nutkis, who tagged out the runner trying to score from second base. Alertly, Nutkis threw to first baseman Luke Colbert, who forced the batter into Neil Reinhardt's tag at second base. Also, Kyle Brantley made a nice catch at 2nd base. Offensively, Nutkis led the way with a triple, two doubles, and three runs scored. Reinhardt reached base five times, and Colbert scored three times.

April 22: The microbe B-team baseball squad defeated Grassland 11-1. Harry West and William Tanner combined to throw five innings without yielding an earned run. The Big Red made several impressive plays on defense. For the fourth consecutive game, MBA converted a double play, this time when Will Andrews fielded a ground ball at third base, stepped on the bag for one out and threw to first baseman Oliver Oldacre for the second. Spencer Wise added two impressive plays at shortstop. Offensively, Jeffrey Nutkis and Oldacre each scored two runs, while Scott Bubis, Jackson Roberts, Will Andrews, Luke Colbert, Harry West, Spencer Wise and Kyle Brantley each scored once.
April 23: MBA's microbe B team swept a double header from host Croft by scores of 9-0 and 6-1. The highlight of the day (and the season) was a triple play in the third inning of the first game. Croft had runners on second and third, when the batter hit a ground ball to shortstop Spencer Wise. The runner from second base tried to advance, but Wise threw to third baseman Will Andrews, who tagged him out. In the meantime, the runner from third got caught in a rundown, and Andrews put him out retreating to third base. Finally, Kyle Brantley tagged out the batter as he tried to advance to second base to complete the triple play. The Big Red pitched exceptionally well, giving up only one run between the two games. Neil Reinhardt pitched four scoreless innings, and was helped by Spencer Wise, Luke Colbert and Jackson Roberts. Offensively, Reinhardt scored three runs, and Scott Bubis hit a hard, run-scoring double.

April 27: The MBA baseball team routed Father Ryan 15-2. Todd Miller pitched a complete game, allowing no runs after the first. Tee Patterson and Brian Harris accounted for 10 of the runs. This performance was much needed following the close losses suffered by the Big Red since region play began. MBA is 9-11, and 2-6 in the region. The game on Friday is for third place in the region.
April 27: The microbe B-team closed out its 7-1 season with a 9-6 victory over Bellevue Middle. The Big Red jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the top of the first inning and held on for the win. Will Andrews, Spencer Wise, and Harry West pitched well, giving up just one run after the first inning. Defensively, MBA turned its 8th double play in as many games when shortstop Neil Reinhardt caught a line drive and threw to first baseman Luke Colbert to force out the runner. Offensively, Wise and Andrews each scored twice, Jackson Roberts had two hits, and Reinhardt reached base four times.
April 27: The 7th/8th grade A baseball team concluded it's regular season play with a tough loss to a strong CPA team last night. However, it was a game they should have won. A couple of costly errors and quiet bats led to the loss. Chris Vincent pitched three strong innings allowing only two earned runs. MBA had notable hitting performances by Whit Woodring, Sam Embry, Tom Corcoran, Zach Brickner and Michael Nunan. MBA finished the regular season 4 - 2 in divisional play which should earn them a 3 seed in the HVAC tournament that starts Monday.
Microbe B Season Recap: The Junior School Baseball B-team compiled an impressive 7-1 record this year by a combined score of 76-18. The team was led by strong defense and a deep pitching staff. Centerfielder Jackson Roberts covered a lot of ground in the outfield while Neil Reinhardt was very consistent at shortstop to lead the Big Red defense which turned eight double plays. Eight of the team's twelve players contributed from the pitchers' mound. Oliver Oldacre, as the team's only lefty, fooled hitters with his unorthodox delivery. Harry West and Neil Reinhardt also aided the staff with their excellent control. Offensively, Scott Bubis hit the team's sole homerun, a drive to deep left-center field. Finally, the squad's three eighth graders--Bubis, Spencer Wise, and Will Andrews--provided the team with invaluable leadership. In the most dramatic game of the season, MBA overcame a 7-6 deficit at Grassland by scoring six runs in the last inning to win the game. The biggest single-play of the year was at Croft, when the team completed a triple play. The future of Big Red Baseball is bright as this talented group makes its way to the high school.

MBA did start a rally in the 7th, scoring 4 runs, but it was too little, too late. MBA finishes region play 2-7, and 9-12 overall.
May 2-3: Game 1: On Monday night the 7th/8th grade baseball A team beat USN 8 - 1 in the first round of the HVAC tournament. Wade Nelson turned out a stellar pitching performance, throwing 6 shutout innings, the longest and most effective outing of our pitchers this year. Timely hitting helped seal the victory for the Big Red in the 5th and 6th innings. Michael Nunan's 3-run triple followed by a 3-run double by Zach Brickner broke the game open as the Big Red jumped to a 7 - 0 lead. Michael Nunan later added about a 320 ft home run at the "fenceless" 42nd Avenue field. New acquisition Neil Reinhardt came in relief in the 7th inning finishing the game with a strong performance. Game 2: Last night the 7th/8th grade baseball A team played it's best game of the year, upsetting a higher seeded Page Middle team, 5 - 4. They outplayed Page in all aspects of the game. Chris Vincent pitched his best game of the season holding Page scoreless for 4 innings, before allowing 2 in the 5th inning. Tom Corcoran struck out the side in the 6th inning in his second short outing of the year, coming off an arm injury. Offensively, MBA jumped out to a 5 - 0 lead on a 2-run single by Matt Ractliffe and the "big blast" of the game, a 2-run bomb over the left field wall by Tom Corcoran. Unfortunately, the game got "too close for comfort" in the bottom of the 7th inning, due to a couple of walks. With the score 5 - 3, Page had the bases loaded with nobody out. Once again Neil Reinhardt came in and escaped the bases loaded jam working a ground ball, strike out, and fly out on consecutive batters, allowing only 1 run to save the game and send MBA to the championship. MBA plays CPA today at Percy Warner Park (across from steeplechase) for the HVAC Championship. Tentative game time 4:00 or 4:30 pm. Please come out and support the team.

Todd Miller improved his record to 4-3, pitching 4 scoreless innings, and Brian Harris pitched the rest of they way in the 10-1 victory. MTCS's strategy of a different pitcher each inning failed them in the 3rd, when MBA scored 6 runs. Andrew Harris started the 2 out rally with an RBI single. Allen Riley was 3-4 with a run and 2 RBI. Clay Cooper added 4 RBI.
