Board of Trust Minutes 1867-2000

Montgomery Bell Academy is the last active vestige of the nineteenth and early twentieth century institution, The University of Nashville, whose school of education became Peabody Normal School, the George Peabody College for Teachers, and whose medical school merged with that of the new Vanderbilt University in 1873. Trustees of Montgomery Bell Academy continue to meet as officials of "The University of Nashviile (Montgomery Bell Academy)". Their minutes (1867-1906) are on deposit at Special Collections, Vanderbilt University, and at the Patrick Wilson Library at MBA (1922-1957). Drafts of minutes for 1974 to 1989 have been deposited by Morton Boyte Howell, Secretary. Minutes, (1989- ) are held in the Office of the Headmaster at MBA. Minutes, 1906-1922, and 1958-1974 are missing.

Since the Board of Trust is the governing body of Montgomery Bell Academy, all policy matters, major initiatives, and concerns are recorded in its minutes. The official Minutes, 1922-1957, have been indexed to provide easy electronic subject access to that period. The earlier Minute Book, (1852-1906,) may be found at Special Collections, Vanderbilt University. It contains little reference to MBA, but focuses on the medical and normal school evolution of the University of Nashville.
